Galliot

As featured on the “Rise of Kings” mod for Rise of Nations!

In the roiling waters of the Atlantic, ancient Roman-style galley warfare was not an option, and so small galleys, known as “galliots” or “fusta” were the escort craft of choice in an age where ships could never be both big and agile at the same time – the role of heavy ships were to be replaced with carracks (and later on in the 17th century, galleons). This ship was also popular with Muslim and Greek pirate crews who terrorised southern Europe’s seas, because its shallow draught allowed it to be hidden along the small islets that dotted the Mediterranean. Even long after tall ships became more agile and more destructive in power, galleys continued to be used in conflicts throughout Asia, Europe and even the Americas until the height of the Industrial Age.

Mediterranean Galleass

Mediterranean Galleass

As seen in the mod  “Rise of Kings: Chronicles” for Rise of Nations!

A hybrid of a fully-rigged ship and a galley, the galleass is an attempt to combining the movement and construction speed and cost of a galley with the line of sight, firepower, range, armour and rate of fire of a carrack, by having side guns as opposed to bow-mounted guns. Although slow and unwieldly thanks to its size, it did not stop other nations such as Spain, England and even the Ottomans from adopting galleasses in their fleets (in Turkey, a galleass was known as a mavna): the early Tudor navy had around a dozen galleasses which were meant to complement the great ships or carracks of the fleet. Eventually, the Galleass lost its oars and adopted a more extensive sailplan, evolving into the galleon and the frigate, the latter owing its name to the “fregata” or pocket galleass, a smaller version of the Galleass that attempted to reconcile the dilemma between having large hulls (Galleasses) and mobility (smaller galleys) in the Mediterranean.

Longships

Longships

As seen in the mod “Rise of Kings: Chronicles” for Rise of Nations!

Unleash terror upon your foes upon the shores with these fine warships! Longships were a common sight in Northern European waters, and were not merely confined to the Viking raiders, but were adopted by other peoples as well when their use, with variants such as the early mediaeval English “esnecca”, the Scottish birlinn and the Russian lad’ya.

Different versions with different numbers of oars will be added here over time as demands by users are gradually addressed and implemented.
