Greek Lembos

Greek Lembos

As featured on the “Kings & Conquerors” mod for Rise of Nations!

The lembos (literally, “rowboat”) was the Greek name for a class of light watercraft, based around a hull measuring up to 18 metres with a carrying capacity of fifty people and propelled with the help of a single bank of 16 to 50 oars. In many cases, fleets of lemboi and other light ships were raised by rulers who needed a war fleet but could not afford the costs with maintaining larger vessels, such as the so-called polyremes. Below here are two different versions of the Lembos – one with a single mast, another with a foresail added.

Different versions with different numbers of oars will be added here over time as demands by users are gradually addressed and implemented.

Paddle ships

Paddle ships

The use of wheel paddles in China originates from the Middle Ages, when large vessels were needed for navigating China’s substantial riparian environment. These ships, like many others around the world, were built with two different types of propulsion: they could either use sails when the wind was good, or resort to the use of paddle wheels operated by marines on board using a treadmill. The fact that the Chinese even tried to fend off British marine forces during the Opium Wars with these vessels attests to the viability and utility of their design.

Galliot

As featured on the “Rise of Kings” mod for Rise of Nations!

In the roiling waters of the Atlantic, ancient Roman-style galley warfare was not an option, and so small galleys, known as “galliots” or “fusta” were the escort craft of choice in an age where ships could never be both big and agile at the same time – the role of heavy ships were to be replaced with carracks (and later on in the 17th century, galleons). This ship was also popular with Muslim and Greek pirate crews who terrorised southern Europe’s seas, because its shallow draught allowed it to be hidden along the small islets that dotted the Mediterranean. Even long after tall ships became more agile and more destructive in power, galleys continued to be used in conflicts throughout Asia, Europe and even the Americas until the height of the Industrial Age.

T-26 Light Infantry Tank

T-26 Light Infantry Tank

As featured on the “Age of Darkness” mod for Rise of Nations!

The T-26 was the most widely produced Soviet tank of the Interbellum Era, and were most notable for their use in Finland, East Asia, and particularly Spain during the Civil War. Although cheap and fairly effective when it first appeared in 1931, it was slow, poorly armoured and highly vulnerable to anti-tank guns and the more powerful high-calibre guns of later tanks during the Second World War.

Penteres

Penteres

As featured on the “Kings & Conquerors” mod for Rise of Nations!

In the Hellenistic Era, the position of the Triremis as the backbone was usurped by an even heavier and more powerful vessel — the “Five” or Quinquiremis. Although the Quinquiremis or Penteres as it was known to the Greeks had existed as early as the Bronze Age, it was not until the increased competition between the Diadochid kingdoms which sprang up after Alexander’s demise in Babylon, that there would be increased demand for more powerful warships to project power in the Mediterranean.

In the western Mediterranean, however, the “Five” remained the backbone of the Carthaginian (and much later, the Roman) fleets. A “five” would be around 45 m long, displace around 100 tonnes, be some 5 m wide at water level, and have its deck standing ca. 3 m above sea level.

?????????! 请来看我们的华语网页! Veja o nosso site em português! Kunjungilah lama web kami dalam Bahasa Melayu! La Trirema

As featured on the “Kings & Conquerors” mod for Rise of Nations!

Queen of the seas for centuries, the triremis (literally in Greek, “three-oar”) was the backbone of most Mediterranean navies prior to the rise of Alexander the Great, and consisted of a warship propelled by three banks of oars, hence its name. The triremis is often heavily associated with the Athenian Greeks, who established a fleet of such warships for the Athenian republic, allowing Athens to embark on a journey towards commercial domination and glory.
