The Sovietsky Soyuz was meant to be the precursor of a line of battleships to be built for the Soviet Union in the 1930s. If built they would have been comparable to the “super-battleship” classes being built by Germany and Japan, such as the Bismarck, but construction delays, the inability of the Soviet Union to build steel armour of sufficient thickness as well as structural defects meant that the warships could not be built and by the end of the Second World War, all four keels that had been laid down were scrapped.
